"I'm a strong advocate of the educational philosophy of 'learning by doing,'" states Femanie. She makes sure this principle is a core element of her classes. While math and drama may seem like an unlikely pairing, her guidance brings them together with a unique energy and appeal, making them some of the most popular classes among students.
Femanie’s enthusiasm for sharing knowledge and, more importantly, inspiring students to follow their dreams makes her a prime example of Meilun's dedicated teaching staff.

Originally from the Philippines, Femanie has honed her teaching approach over 13 years of experience. Her decision to become an educator was driven by a personal quest. "I’m passionate about sharing knowledge and helping students reach their goals—that simple desire led me to teaching." She holds a Bachelor's and Master's degree in Mathematics and is currently working on her doctorate.
Math and Drama Build Student Confidence
数学×戏剧:理性与感性的自信碰撞

In addition to teaching BC Mathematics and AP Calculus, Femanie also teaches drama. It's a fascinating blend: math emphasizes rational, logical thinking, while drama is all about emotional, outward expression. Femanie explains with a smile, I'm mainly a math person, but I've always enjoyed the arts too. Back in the Philippines, I often helped organize school events, took part in performances, and guided students in contests and shows. Those experiences gave me a strong foundation to step into teaching drama when the opportunity came after I started teaching here in China. She finds that these two distinct subjects actually enhance one another in her classroom. "They complement each other in a very interesting way," making her lessons both efficient and engaging.

In drama, she uses activities to boost self-confidence, a skill that proves highly beneficial in math. "My experience in drama has helped me apply creative strategies to build students’ confidence in dealing with data. In math, I encourage them to write their solutions on the board and articulate their reasoning clearly, which is a great confidence builder. I also have students create posters showcasing their hands-on activities to help them internalize and visualize the concepts.

Her classroom walls are filled with these student-created posters. "This creative process helps students grasp and retain mathematical concepts more deeply." In this way, art and mathematics move forward together. "Drama also allows for the integration of math. It helps me create a logical structure and framework for planning and organizing drama activities." For Femanie, art and mathematics go hand in hand, where logic and creativity form a harmonious synthesis.
Learning by Doing
实践出真知:她的教学信仰

Femanie's teaching philosophy is heavily influenced by the pragmatist John Dewey, as she firmly believes that "learning must be rooted in practical experience". In both math and drama, she encourages students to connect classroom theory to real-world scenarios through active, hands-on participation. "In math class, I take students outside to measure the height of inaccessible objects, like buildings or trees." Since they can't use a tape measure directly, students must use a clinometer and trigonometry. The students report that this practical exercise helped them truly understand the 'tangent ratio'.

During last year's New Year's Gala and Coming-of-Age Ceremony, Pre-BC students performed Charlie and the Chocolate Factory on the main stage. For many, it was their very first time performing, and the entire play was in English. "I’m incredibly proud of them; it was a huge developmental leap," Femanie says, beaming as she describes the two projects, clearly showing how much she enjoys this kind of teaching. "That performance showcased their growth, and it's an unforgettable experience they will carry with them."
Witnessing the Adaptability of Students
学生成长记:从迷茫到闪光

Over her 2 years at MIC, Femanie has observed the students' remarkable resilience and adaptability. "They come from diverse backgrounds and have to manage multiple courses taught entirely in English, yet they flourish here." She notes that their enthusiasm during hands-on activities always makes her "eager to give my all". She describes them as "inquisitive, hard-working, and full of resolve."
Femanie特别提到一位学生——入学时英文比较弱,在第一次测验中只能用中文写下“对不起老师,我看不懂题目,如果我懂我会做得更好。”如今,这位学生已能在测验中取得90多分。她异常欣慰且感慨地说,我非常骄傲和惊讶她的成长。“她真的很努力学习,做笔记,抄词汇,学习提高数学技能和英语水平。”
Femanie is particularly gratified by the students' classroom progress, noting their journey from initial confusion to achieving excellent test scores. She shared the story of one student who enrolled with almost no English and could only write a Chinese apology on her first test: "Sorry, teacher, I don't understand the question." Today, that same student consistently scores above 90.
"I am both proud and astonished by her development," Femanie reflects. "She truly dedicated herself—taking notes, copying vocabulary, and working to improve both her math skills and her English."

Of course, Femanie has effective strategies for when students face challenges. For those struggling in math, she encourages them to ask questions and fosters peer-to-peer support through group work. "Sometimes I ask them to work on assignments independently, and other times I encourage them to teach and share with one another." For shy students in drama, Femanie uses a gradual approach, guiding them from private practice to group presentations, and eventually to stage performances. "Before performing for an audience, I ensure they are fully prepared. We rehearse repeatedly for everything: speaking, acting, and stage presence." She explains that once students feel capable, performing for an audience delivers a huge sense of accomplishment and self-confidence.
China is My Second Home
“热爱旅行 中国是第二个家”
如今,已经完全融入和享受在中国生活的Femanie说,“中国是我的第二个家。”她喜欢这里和平、高效与科技感——“从便捷的交通系统到现代建筑,甚至无人驾驶的出租车,都让我惊叹。”她笑着说,她甚至开始热爱中国文化,尤其钟情佛山。“它给了我一个繁华的城市生活和充满活力的文化景象的结合,而美伦国际高中这个社区,也让我更加享受在这里生活、工作和学习。她说,无论是中方员工,还是外籍同事都让她感到温暖和支持。“在MIC工作与生活平衡方面做得也很好,学年结束后的旅行和丰富多彩的活动,营造出非常积极的工作氛围。”
Femanie has fully settled into life in China and declares, "China is my second home." She appreciates the country's peace, efficiency, and advanced technology —"from the efficient transport system to the modern architecture, and even the driverless taxis. I’m constantly amazed." She adds that she has developed a deep affection for Chinese culture, especially the city of Foshan. "Foshan provides a great mix of bustling city life and vibrant culture, and the MIC community makes my life, work, and study here even better." She feels supported and welcomed by both local and international colleagues. "MIC also maintains a great work-life balance, with end-of-year trips and varied activities that foster a wonderful work environment."
在闲暇时,Femanie热爱旅行,她已踏足了26个国家,也几乎走遍了中国的大江南北,从哈尔滨、沈阳到成都、重庆,从北京、上海到深圳、广州、佛山.....“每个城市都散发着独特的魅力拥有着独特的氛围,每个城市都带给我不同的体验,我都很喜欢。”
In her downtime, Femanie is an avid traveler, having visited more than 20 countries and explored nearly every corner of China, from Jilin, Harbin, and Shenyang to Chengdu and Chongqing, and from Beijing and Shanghai to Shenzhen, Guangzhou, and Foshan. "Each city has its own unique charm and atmosphere; I enjoy the different experiences each one offers."
